(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 17, 2013 ) Carmichael, CA -- The Center for Health Policy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center says 20 counties in the state don’t have a single dentist practicing in the area, and another 31 countries have less than two dentists.
While the state has provides programs to give dental students up to $20,000 a year in tuition reimbursement, those incentives are not enough due to the high cost of dental college. Unfortunately, all throughout the U.S., less dentists are coming onto the scene to practice because of such high costs.
Jim Simpson, Ph.D., and director for the Center of Health Policy at UNM College of Public Health, says it isn’t easy for some Nebraskans to schedule preventive care for their teeth, because the closest dentist may be two hours away.
Another growing problem is the amount of dentists willing to accept a state’s medicaid program. Most of the children on medicaid in the state of Nebraska have never seen a dentist, because there are so few dentists that accept that type of insurance, forcing parents to pay out of pocket for their child’s dental care.
