(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 08, 2013 ) Edmonton, Canada -- While visiting your dentist twice a year is a good idea for overall oral health, a new study that has been published in the Journal of Dental Research is now stating that there is little evidence of the practice being a necessity for adults.
"It actually affirms the concept of recare or revisiting your dentist based upon your risk," said Dr. Mark Wolff, Chairman of the NYU Dentistry Cariology and Comprehensive Care.
Dr. Wolf stated that many are not at risk of developing afflictions like gum disease or tooth decay from missing appointments. Many can get away with seeing their dentist only once a year. However, he emphasizes that the practice is not a one-size-fits-all rule.
"When you brush your teeth, you get blood on the toothbrush, you have diabetes, you don’t feel well, you have all sorts of systemic problems, you should be seeing the dentist sometimes every three months not every six months," explained Dr. Wolff.
The University of Michigan housed the research. The researchers found that there were preventative benefits for those who exhibited high-risk characteristics when visiting the dentist more than once a year. Wolff stated that if instructed to do a checkup every six months, it is a good idea to ask why they believe six months is necessary.
"That's a very fair question and all dentists,” said Wolff. “All physicians will explain why, 'well I'm monitoring this, we need to watch that'."
The key, according to experts, is to be aware and in control of one's own dental health. Unlike other areas of health, there are few incentives for insurers to focus on the preventative care. That means that individuals must take charge.
"If you have an abscess on your foot, that's covered under the Affordable Care Act, if you have an abscess on your tooth it may not be. Teeth one through 32 have been carved out of that whole system," explained Dr. Wolff.
