(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 29, 2013 ) England, UK -- According to a new study conducted by Sun Life Financial, American workers fear the financial consequences of a critical illness more than the Grim Reaper. "Well-Placed Fears: Workers' Perceptions of a Critical Illness," is the title of the Sun Life Financial survey.
The survey found that nearly half of the workers questioned, ages 40 to 50, rated the financial consequences of a critical illness as their biggest concern. Only 29 percent rated dying from a critical illness as worrisome. This fear was more pronounced among single workers, single parents and single women.
The report found that single women in that 40 to 50 age group, who earn less than $50,000 per year, were four times more troubled by the potential financial fallout of a critical illness than about being killed by it, for example. Most single women and single parents ages 22 to 39 making the same amount of money were also more worried about paying the tab from illnesses than dying from them.
In spite of all these fears, most of the workers do not have the insurance coverage to cover such an event. Thirty-six percent of these workers think they have the coverage but less than five percent actually do. Bob Klein, senior vice president of Sun Life's voluntary and multi-line divisions, concludes “Our findings suggest that benefits brokers and [human resources] decision-makers might especially want to consider offering critical illness and cancer insurance if their employee base contains a significant group of women, workers age 40 to 50 or singles."
