Omega 3 Fish Oil May Be Key To Flu Treatment

Ballena Nelle's Tess Mckay explains why Omega 3 is so important for overall health

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 26, 2013 ) Nevada, Las Vegas -- A team of researchers lead by Yumiko Imai found that Protectin D1, a metabolic substance derived from Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), one of the primary omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids found in some fish oil, reduced the likelihood of death in mice infected with influenza. The metabolic substance seems to suppress the spread of the virus.

Protectin D1 appears to be almost as effective as the antiviral drug Peramivir, which was authorized by the Food and Drug Administration for the emergency treatment of the 2009 H1N1 swine flu. A combination of Peramivir and Protectin D1 appears to be more effective than either treatment alone.

Current antiviral treatments are not effective when given to patients two or more days after being infected. This new treatment appears to work even when given two days after infection.

In the United States, 5% to 20% of the population becomes infected by the flu each year although the severity varies annually. According to the CDC, the amount of flu-related deaths ranged from 3,000 to approximately 49,000 from 1976 to 2006.

Omega 3 fish oil has long been a supplement thought to keep people healthy in some western cultures but until now there hasn't been any clinical research linking fish oil directly to stronger immune systems. The results of this trial are the first scientific indications there may be benefits in taking omega 3 supplements to combat the flu.

In addition to being a potential flu treatment, fish oil may have other benefits. A common source for omega-3 fatty acids is cold water oily fish, such as salmon, tuna and sardines.

"Omega-3 is the subject of literally thousands of clinical tests linking it to many other potential health benefits," said Tess Mckay, a customer service representative for Ballena Nelle.

Ballena Nelle Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3 Fish Oil contains over two times the concentration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA per capsule, than many standard fish oil supplements sold in America.

Ballena Nelle uses sardines and anchovies from the southern Pacific, because they have the highest DHA and EPA levels and the lowest exposure to contaminants. The fish oil is then refined and independently tested to make sure it has been purified from mercury, PCBs and dioxins. It is then shipped to the U.S. where it is manufactured into the highest quality softgel capsules.
