(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a recent study, pulsed dye lasers can safely and effectively treat acne vulgaris and localized plaque psoriasis.
Researchers in the Netherlands examined PubMed for publications between January 1992 and August 2011 in order to make a recommendation concerning pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment for inflammatory skin disease. They uncovered 2,215 articles relating to PDL treatment and determined a level of evidence for each.
52 articles were included in the study covering PDL-treated inflammatory skin diseases such as acne vulgaris, psoriasis, granuloma faciale, chronic eczema, granuloma annulare, lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, lichen sclerosus, reticular erythematous mucinosis, Jessner lymphocytic infiltration of the skin and papulopustular rosacea. PDL treatment for localized recalcitrant plaque psoriasis; localized, chronic stable plaque psoriasis; and plaque-type psoriasis appeared in 11 articles.
The efficacy of treatment was described for each, and grades of A to D were assigned. The grades were assigned concerning how well PDL treated different types of skin ailments - from plaque psoriasis and acne vulgaris to cutaneous sarcoidosis and nail psoriasis.
Because most conclusions were not randomized controlled trials, the review was limited according to researchers.
The researchers explained that PDL treatment for inflammatory skin diseases is effective for acne vulgaris and localized psoriasis. It is a recommended course of treatment if conventional therapies have failed or need to be supplemented. For other inflammatory skin disease, PDL can be considered as an alternative treatment. They further stated that long-term studies with high numbers of participants are needed to generate more conclusive results.
