(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 12, 2013 ) Creve Coeur, MO -- According to a report by the Pew Charitable Trusts, in 2011, over 58 percent of children enrolled in California state’s government program, Medi-Cal, did not receive any dental service, meaning 14 million children on medicaid did not receive proper dental care. In Fresno County, Medi-Cal reported under 48 percent of children saw a dentist in 2011, showing that more than half of children enrolled in the insurance program did not see a dentist.
Unfortunately, Fresno County health providers said finding dental care for young children will become increasingly harder in the coming months, as the state is set to enroll another 1 million children statewide in the Medi-Cal dental program in 2014 as part of the Affordable Care Act that goes into effect as of January 1. To make thing worse, the state is also going to reduce how much it will reimburse medical providers, resulting in fewer dentists willing to treat low-income children.
The Pew research also found that dentists in California are aging and are not being replaced by entry level fast enough. According to the Pew Children’s Dental Campaign, 37 percent of dentists nationwide are over 55 years of age, but in California, that rate is 32.6 percent. Children’s dentistry is generally short-numbered anyway, requiring special skills for handling and treating young patients and small mouths.
Roughly 1 in 4 federally funded health centers in low income communities did not offer dental services in 2011.
