Omega 3 Fish Oil May Prevent Premature Births

Ballena Nelle explains why Omega 3 is so important for health and how best to get healthy levels

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 10, 2013 ) Las Vegas, Nevada -- Fish oil supplements may help pregnant women avoid premature births, according to a study led by Maria Makrides at the University of Adelaide.

Makrides and her team of researchers studied 2,400 pregnant women and found that the women who took supplements with omega-3 fatty acid gave birth later and had larger, heavier babies than the women in the placebo group.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated one million babies die each year from complications related to premature births. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every nine births is premature. The WHO estimates that approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely each year, and the figure is continuing to grow.

A full-time pregnancy lasts from 37 to 41 weeks. A premature or preterm birth is when the baby is born before 37 weeks.

Premature babies may experience lifelong medical problems such as cerebral palsy, hearing loss and intellectual disabilities. The earlier a baby is born, the greater his risks are for severe medical problems. Babies born between 39 and 41 weeks have a decreased mortality risk, according to a study published by "Obstetrics & Gynecology."

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, which mean they are required for good health and can't be synthesized by humans or animals. Some sources of omega-3 fatty acids are oily fish, flax seeds, soybeans and tofu. Omega-3 fatty acids are also available in supplement form.

"Low omega-3 levels are increasingly being looked at by researchers as a significant factor in a multitude of health conditions, and omega-3 fish oil is one of the most common supplements recommended by the medical profession," said Tess Mckay, a customer service representative for Ballena Nelle.

Ballena Nelle Pharmaceutical Grade Omega 3 Fish Oil comes from wild anchovies and sardines and contains 55% eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) per capsule. Many other fish oil supplements are composed mostly of fillers and are not refined to the same quality.

Anchovies and sardines from the cold deep waters of the southern Pacific are used because they have the highest DHA and EPA levels. Also, because they are not long living and are lower on the marine food chain – they are not as exposed to pollution and contaminants as are some other longer living species. The fish oil is then purified and independently tested in Norway to make sure the product does not contain mercury, PCBs or dioxins.

"While there is debate about how effective they are for some medical conditions, there is no debate that sufficient omega-3 levels are necessary for good health," said Mckay.
