If a tooth is lost, or if decay takes a tooth or two, that is it. From then on, the person is left without a tooth and must rely on dentures.
It is a pain for many, but a reality that must be dealt with for now. However, one team of researchers are looking into a way to grow human teeth, and are looking to alligators to find the answers.
American alligators have 80 teeth on average. Each tooth is replaced about once per year. Over their lives, an alligator regenerates an average total of 4,000 teeth. That fact is why the researchers from the United States, China, and Taiwan, are working towards created a detailed study regarding the secret behind the alligator's ability to regrow teeth.
The study on the reptile teeth is, of course, not anywhere near finding a way to regrow them in humans yet; however, the research is taking the first steps toward the possibility in the future. Understanding the way in which alligators are able to regrow the teeth will give a basic blueprint for the endeavor, as well as give possible insight into the genetic disease that has individuals grow extra teeth in their tooth bed.
The study has so far involved researchers taking snapshots of alligator teeth through their cycle of growth and loss. Researchers inject juvenile gators with chemicals that help them note cells in the animal's tissues that were growing and multiplying.
Scientists have long know that backup teeth lie beneath the berthed teeth; however, the researchers are interested in exactly what happens to the mature tooth. They are also interested in when the process of growth for the underlying tooth looks like.
Researchers have thus far concluded that the dental lamina likely possess stem cells that create the capability for tooth regrowth.
