Study Shows Soda Use as Destructive to Oral Health as Drug Use

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study from the U.S. Academy of General Dentistry, the heavy consumption of soda and like products is as bad for one's teeth as the use of hard illicit drugs such as methamphetamine or crack cocaine.

Mohamed Bassiouny released his article titled “Dental Erosion Due to Abuse of Illicit Drugs and Acidic Carbonated Beverages, which was published in the March issue of the U.S. Academy of General Dentistry’s peer reviewed journal of General Dentistry.

The study created a comparison between three individuals who admitted to meth use, cocaine use, and soda drinking. Each admitted to poor oral hygiene along with their abuses, and admitted to not visiting the dentist on a regular basis.

“Each person experienced severe tooth erosion caused by the high acid levels presented in the drug of choice: either meth, crack, or soda,” said Bassiouny.

According to the study, the soda drinker was a woman in her early 30s, and admitted to drinking two liters of diet soda daily for the previous five years. The dentition was noted as being in a “catastrophic state”.

Bassiouny added that the patient's particular situation was worsened by the intake of junk food and the holding of acidic beverages in her mouth before she swallowed.

“The citric acid present in both the regular and diet soda varieties is known to have a high potential for causing tooth erosion,” stated Bassiouny.

“The striking similarities that are founding the study should be a wake-up call to the consumers who believe that soda is not harmful to their oral health,” he stated.

Bassiouny stated that many years of high sugar content was thought to only be attributable through sugar-sweetened soda, causing weight gain and obesity. However, these studies help create an understanding that the oral health of an individual is also directly affected by the consumption of such items.
