More than 30 million people in the English speaking countries are suffering from one of the major addictions such as alcohol, internet, gambling etc. Many more people are unsure about their behavior and wonder whether they are addicted or not.
On Lavario’s web site there is now a simple test with a couple of multiple choice questions and respondents get a first evaluation of their answers immediately after answering the questions. Participants remain anonymous and no email address needs to be submitted.
Lavario explains that the quiz cannot substitute the personal evaluation of a physician or a psychotherapist but it can give a good first orientation. In the results of the quiz, participants also learn what characterizes addictive behavior, such as loss of control, feelings of guilt and shame and a continuously increasing dose of the drug.
Lavario states that among the first 1.000 respondents around 25% received a result that encouraged them to look for a therapy. More than 30% of participants were clearly not addicted, according to what they answered in the questions. The remaining 45% had a tendency towards addictive behavior and should therefore monitor their behavior and make sure that they won't lose control.
Lavario states that awareness of a problem is the first step on a journey to overcoming an addiction. In case of addictive behavior, it's advisable to look for a psychotherapist and specialized counseling. Self-help programs can be an interesting option for those who are afraid to open up to a stranger and talk about their problems and fears.
