(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The saying “being alone is better than being in bad company” is apparently more true than ever when it comes to mental health, at least if you believe the research coming out of the University of Michigan.
Psychiatrist Dr. Alan Teo, found at the helm of the recent study, has noted that those who have unsupportive and/or critically obtuse spouses or significant others were more likely to be depressed than those who had a steady relationship.
"The quality of your relationships matters more than quantity when it comes to depression," he told NPR.
The research specifically surveyed over 4,500 individuals across the United States who ranged in ages from 25 to 75. The study first took survey numbers in the 1990s, and did a follow-up survey a decade later. The individuals were asked to measure their partner's level of support. Questions ranged from "How much can you rely on him or her for help if you have a serious problem?" and "How much can you open up to him or her if you need to talk about your worries?"
They were asked to gauge just how strained their respective relationships were at the moment, with questions being asked such as “How often does he or she criticize you?" and "How often does he or she let you down when you are counting on him or her?"
The study was originally created to examine the general effects of non-marital couples who had friends and family on depression. However, after initial research was found to be less than optimal in predicting the depression, it was found that spousal relationships were much more reliable.
The report shows that the importance of supportive communication is fundamental to avoiding the onset of depression either in lulls or as a sustained state. Studies will still need to be handled in order to detect whether the depression is developed through the cause of critical behavior, or if the behavior only allows already dormant depression to surface.
