(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A sketchy doctor in California who duped patients out of a total of $1.3 million by selling them beef-flavored herbs instead of chemotherapy has been sentenced to 14 years in prison and to pay back all the money she earned in the scam.
The phony cancer treatments cost each patient around $100,000 over a period of six months. Dr. Daniel told her cancer patients to avoid chemotherapy and pain killers, and instead charged them outrageously for her unique treatment that she promised would cure cancer.
Her concoction of cancer “curing” substances had a 60 to 80 percent chance of overcoming even advanced stages of cancer, and in addition, could cure diabetes and multiple sclerosis, she claimed.
But unfortunately her remedies, which she said were tailored to each individual patient, were completely bogus. Experts testified that the potion, made from sunscreen preservatives, beef extract flavoring and various other herbs and ingredients, would have absolutely no effect on cancer or any other type of disease she claimed it would cure.
What that means is that her patients had to endure their final months in absolute agony and pain. Prosecutors argued that Daniel not only robbed them of money, but also their hopes and dreams of having a cure. The court heard from 28 former patients and family members of cancer sufferers that died as a result of the fraud.
According to a family member, Paula Middlebrooks underwent 5 months of the bogus treatment made by Daniel and after paying $60,000, she was told she was cured. In reality, her breast cancer had metastasized and she died shortly after.
Daniel bogusly treated several patients who had curable cancers, but instead died as a result of not receiving any type of treatment. A 22 year old woman who suffered from neck lymphoma was told by Daniel not to bother with chemo. Although it’s a fairly treatable cancer, the woman died because she listened to Daniel.
U.S. District Judge Timlin charged Daniel with four counts of mail and wire fraud, six counts of tax evasion and one count of witness tampering.
