(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While there have been many studies on Alzheimer’s for cures and treatments over the years, a recent trial study performed at Oxford University was the first to show many benefits of taking a B vitamin supplement could potentially delay the disease.
In the study at Oxford, patients receiving a placebo form of a B vitamin continued to suffer from rapid shrinkage of the brain and memory loss, whereas patients receiving the actual dose of B vitamin were almost entirely protected from memory loss and brain shrinkage.
Teodoro Bottiglieri Baylor from the Institute of Metabolic Disease in Dallas doesn’t seemed surprised by the results, saying the link between brain deterioration and memory loss is standard neurology textbook stuff.
Although other studies have shown the correlation between B vitamins and brain capacity, the levels of vitamins used in the study were much higher. It also made a bigger promise than ever before that it is important to prevent brain shrinkage that could later lead to Alzheimer’s.
Currently, five million people in America suffer from the disease, while another 15 million are forced to watch their loved ones lose even the most precious memories as their brain capacity diminishes over time.
B vitamins are a healthy additive to anyone’s diet, Bottiglier said, so taking it even in your early 30s and continuing it for the rest of your life can make a huge impact on the effect it has on the brain. It’s not too early, or too late, to start taking B vitamins.
