(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 26, 2013 ) Englewood, CO -- By the end of 2011, The number of Americans who receive Social Security Disability Insurance has more than doubled since 1991, from 5.2 million to close to 11.7 million claiming disability.
The number of people receiving SSDI benefits varies from state to state. For example, close to 10 percent of people aged 18 to 64 are collected social security benefits. Those numbers are more than three times the amount of claims in Utah and Alaska.
The proportional for eligible workers applying for social security benefits has also doubled in the past 10 years, according to the Social Security Administration. There are two reasons for this. First, baby boomers are hitting the age of which they are more likely to become disabled with poor health, reaching retirement and slowing down. Second, women who started working in the 1970s and 80s are now eligible for social security benefits for the first time.
Tad Dehaven, a budget analyst at the Cato Institute explains that the recession also plays a major factor in people’s decision to apply for disability. And where the recession hits the worst, that is where the SSA sees the most claims of disability. “When you see unemployment rates rising, you see disability claims rise with it,” Dehaven said.
However, it is important to recognize that disability also skews that unemployment rate. When an American applies for disability, they can’t be working, therefore, they can’t be counted as part of the workforce.
