Insurance Rates Decrease in Britain as Response to Bogus Whiplash Claims

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 19, 2013 ) Dublin, Ireland -- Car insurance premium rates have decreased by £30 since new measures were introduced by the government last year to prevent fraudulent claims of whiplash, which were causing insurance rates to continually rise.

The Mail on Sunday campaigned against the bogus claims of “whiplash” due to minor accidents, which cost the insurance industry nearly £2 billion a year, raising premiums by as much as £100 a year, a ridiculous increase for such a tiny claim.

The Commons Transport Select Committee are still investigating the full extent of damage related to the false reports, but it says it has certainly increased the cost of living in parts of Britain.

CMCs and Doctors in Kahoots

According to the MoS, prior to last year’s toughened laws, claims management companies (CMCs) used to encourage drivers to submit over-exaggerated claims of whiplash to collect a settlement for minor accidents.

The UK Daily Mail investigated the fiasco and found that emergency room doctors and family practitioners alike were willing to fill out false reports diagnosing whiplash for their patients, adding fuel to the fire.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling upheld the MoS investigation and warned that the government would be cracking down on more bogus cases and punishing claims management companies for encourage motorists to collect money they don’t deserve.

The Promise of Lower Insurance Premiums

The Association of British Insurers met with the Prime Minister last year during the wake of new laws and made a promise to lower the insurance premiums for drivers when the savings started becoming noticeable. With the decrease in premiums, although only ⅓ of the risen costs, is still a significant difference and the association believes it will continue to lower.

Several insurance companies are excited about the decrease in whiplash claims and expect to lower premiums by as much as £100 towards the end of this year.
