(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 08, 2013 ) Altamonte Springs, FL -- While one may not believe a simple smile can make all the difference when it comes to interaction, it true does. What is sometimes considered a platitude or hyperbole is true: a simple smile can set a person at ease, and make the world seem like a better place, even if for a brief moment.
The University of Bristol in England has disclosed that the power behind even the most simple of smiles can influence a person in the most positive ways. The study has suggested that smiling faces lower violence and aggression in other individuals. It is important to note that the smile must be seen as sincere, and not at all a smirk or condescending.
The experiment was created using two groups, one using adults between the ages of 18 and 30, and the other using high-risk youth, almost three-fourths of which had criminal records. Each group viewed images of happy and angry faces that were displayed on a screen. Each participant was also asked to rate his or her feelings before the test began. They then ranked the images shown on the computer and noted the faces as either happy or angry.
Researchers then told the healthy group that some of their initial guesses were actually mistaken. They notified the individuals that some faces were misread. Some of the healthy adults then modified their respective opinions on particular faces, saying those they had rated as angry were actually happy.
The following experiment segment noted the high-risk teens who underwent the same test. The teenagers who were trained to interpret more ambiguous expressions were significantly less aggressive after two weeks following the study. The report relied on the youths explaining their emotions both before and after the study.
Thus, individuals tend to assume they misread faces as negative, and are willing to give the benefit of the doubt to ambiguous faces, assuming they are actually happy. Furthermore, those who learn to interpret ambiguous faces as non-aggressive toward one's self has the ability to have more positive interactions and feel happier on average.
