Study Shows Waking Throughout the Night Could be Linked to AlzheimerÂ’s

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 07, 2013 ) England, UK -- The saying that there is not enough time in the day is becoming more and more popular as the world becomes more inundated with both professional and personal must-dos and anyone's daily list. The fast-paced lifestyle that comes in conjunction with the ever-growing focus on multiple sources of digital media makes it hard for one to unplug the brain and get one's brain to calm down enough for sleep. Many Americans are beginning to give up extra sleep in order to make more time in the day.

Apparently, all the lack of sleep is now creating very real concerns, as Alzheimer's disease may be linked to such activities, according to Washington University of Medicine.

The St. Louis university stated in a new preliminary study that “poor-quality sleep may have worse effects than simple fatigue. Lack of quality sleep is linked to the buildup of brain plaques seen in people with Alzheimer’s disease.” For the study, researchers monitored the patterns of sleep of nearly 100 mentally healthy individuals that were aged 45 to 80. They discovered upon observation that there those who awakened multiple times throughout sleep were found more likely to also possess “amyloid plaque accumulations” in their brain. Nearly half of the healthy persons who were observed had a history of Alzheimer's, which assisted the researchers in determining whether or not there were genetic precursors to the affliction.

Assistant professor of neurological studies, Dr. Yo-El Ju explained how the Washington University study has set out to pinpoint the marker for Alzheimer's disease, stating: “We were initially looking at duration of sleep, but it seems the quality of sleep is more important to this association. We don’t know if early Alzheimer’s is causing poor sleep, or vice-versa.”

Of the 100 tested in the latest study, 24% who has less efficient sleep also had indicators for Alzheimer's disease. Those individuals also only had near 6.5 hours of sleep, due to brief awakenings during the course of otherwise sound sleep. Further studies are being handled by Washington, but the understanding of plaque build up seems to be a “biomarkers” for the corrosive disease.
