(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 02, 2013 ) London, UK -- Mothers who pick up their babies and cradle them or move about when they are crying seem to trigger highly specific sets of emotional and physical responses according to a new study released provided in the Current Biology journal. Researchers believe that the responses developed as a portion of the bonding between the mother and child.
In a video that accompanied an online release of the study, scientists pointed out that mothers of other mammalian species demonstrated the carrying behavior as well. Researchers claim that this is the first time that anecdotal evidence regarding the efficacy of carrying a child is a soothing technique that can be demonstrated among humans as well.
Some of the key information that gave to light is as followed: The behaviors that the scientists measured, noted as “central, motor, and cardiac regulations” were triggered by mothers carrying infants whilst walking. Mother who were sitting whilst holding their respective baby did not trigger at the same level as those who moved about, according to researchers' reports.
Secondly, measured responses to being picked up and carried included a significant and rapid decrease in heart rate, as well as a hat of voluntary movement and crying. Third, researchers who conducted the study noted that the behaviors developed likely to increase the mother-infant bonding. They noted specifically within the infant, the action was “innate” and are meant to promote “maternal proximity.
Researchers also observed that in the case of infants who began to cry, if the mother began walking about whilst holding the child, there was an “automatic change” to the mother's actions. And while although mothers were utilized in the study, the reaction seems to be the effect of any primary caregiver showing such attention.
Finally, the researchers tested mice as well to see if there were similar behavioral mechanisms that would reveal themselves, and those findings were positive.
