Research Finds Elderly Women Account for Majority of Falling Injuries

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 02, 2013 ) England, UK -- With the ever-aging population, there has been a number of elderly individuals hospitalized after falls increased by over 5,000 in a single year, and women appear to account for a majority of the falls, according to a new report.

The latest numbers from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has shown that 83,800 persons aged over 65 were hospitalized in the 2009/10 financial year. That showed an increase of 5,100 from the previous 12 months.

The most common form of injury was slipping, tripping, and stumbling to the ground. Less frequent was falling down of stairs or off furniture, accounting to the report.

Nearly 70% of falls occurred in the home of the individual or at the aged care facility. Nearly a third of all injuries were to the hip or thigh, and a fifth were located at the skull.

"This condition is at advanced age - 75, 85, 95 - when people become very unstable on their feet and bones become weak in many cases," AIHW spokesman Professor James Harrison told AAP.
"The ageing population is another way of saying the proportion of people in the overall population that are in the at risk age group is increasing."
The report noted that there was 69% of cases involved with women, which can be attributed to the simple fact that women tend to live longer, says Professor Harrison.

He noted the average 15.5 days elderly patients will spend being held at the hospital after the fall is correct given the injury types sustained. He noted the days and money spent made a “very strong public policy and budgetary” case for preventing accidents and trying to limit the seriousness of standard injuries.

He noted that falling can be managed by encouraging older individuals to keep generally fit and exercise balance and strength. He also encouraged more education regarding drugs that make bones weaker.

"There is quite strong imperatives to look for ways of reducing the risk to a person, even if you can only reduce the risk per person of falling and fracturing a little bit," Prof Harrison said.
