(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 30, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – Friends for Life serves as one of the oldest, most comprehensive HIV/AIDS organizations in the southern United States. They offer HIV/AIDS education and awareness, access to food through their Food Pantry and Feast for Friends, transportation, and healthy life skills. In 1999, Friends for Life expanded their services by merging with Aloysius Home to offer rental housing and permanent supportive housing.
Friends for Life is comprised of a staff that is highly reflective of the population it serves—with 67% of the staff being African American— 41% are living with HIV/AIDS. Over the past 10 years, a total of 87% of individuals assisted are African American with 43% being women and children.
Through the Aloysius Home Housing Service several different types of housing programs are provided. There is a 16 unit apartment building, which offers permanent housing in Midtown Memphis to persons living with HIV/Aids and other special needs that are homeless and capable of living on their own. New Beginnings is one of the newer housing programs that offer 10 single room units. These single room units will house chronically homeless adults living with HIV/AIDS. Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) has housing available in several different locations in Shelby, Fayette and Tipton counties in Tennessee. The Tenant Based Rental Assistance program is also available in Crittenden County in Arkansas and Desoto, Marshall, Tate, and Tunica Counties in Mississippi.
The Nancy Fletcher Food Pantry not only provides food, but also additional items such as personal hygiene, paper products and feminine hygiene products. Participants are able to pick up food bags twice a month. The pantry distributes to more than 1,800 individuals with 300 being women and children. Friends for Life offers a Feast for Friends on the first and third Monday of each month, doors open at 5:00 pm with appetizers served at 6:00pm. Feast for Friends has received several honors for its efforts in volunteering throughout Memphis such as the Best Volunteer Project.
Kroger Pharmacy – Open Monday-Thursday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Kroger Pharmacy offers medication pick-up at Friends for Life, free home delivery, on-site counseling and education, $4.00 generic medications, free generic oral antibiotics and free prenatal vitamins.
HIV & Syphilis Testing – Friends for Life offers free and confidential HIV and Syphilis testing. HIV tests used are the OraQuick ADVANCE Rapid HIV -1 and HIV-2 Antibody Test, no blood or needles used. Results are provided 20 minutes after the test is taken. Syphilis test results are available within seven days, and each individual that returns for their test results receives a free special gift.
