Study Shows Hair Loss and Heart Disease Correlation a Mixed Bag

(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 26, 2013 ) London, UK -- A long-studied concept of balking men having higher risk of heart disease has renewed support after a study released showed there was a correlation. However, experts say that a hair-challenged male need not rush to a doctors office based on the new data, either.

The study was published in the British medical journal of BMJ Open, which pooled results from several studies that had inconsistent results. It concluded that the link likely does exist, but the correlation is modest, and fair weaker than the link between hair loss and the well-known risks caused by smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure.

The findings does give baling men one more reason to work on reducing such risk, according to researcher Tomohide Yamada of the University of Tokyo in Japan. He noted in a response to an email that a balding scalp may be the “marker” of underlying conditions that contribute both to hair loss and the coronary artery disease. Such an underlying problem could be high blood pressure, sensitivity to testosterone, or something more subtle, according to researchers.

Yamada and his colleagues utilized number from six previous research studies, including four that were held in the United States. The studies included a total of 36,990 participants. Four of the six studies found statistically significant linkage between the effect of baldness and indicators of heart disease.

The research was combined in varying ways. First the combination of three of the studies found that men who lost almost all their hair had nearly a one-third increase of developing heart disease. The link was even strong among bald or nearly bald men that were younger than 55.

Those with receding hairlines had less to be concerned about, as studies assessed the severity found at the top of the head was more conducive to possible heart problems than that of those with a frontal balding pattern.
