(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While experts recommend that girls and younger women are vaccinated against the virus that causes cervical cancer, some parents seem to be concerned regarding the vaccine's general safety, according to a new study.
With the United States, experts are stating that the findings are both puzzling and worrying, as vaccines that guard against the human papillomavirus (HPV) have not been linked to any side effects. Still some, parents are holding generally unfounded concerns.
"It's really concerning that parents think the HPV vaccine isn't safe," said Dr. Dennis Cunningham, an infectious disease specialist at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Cunningham, who was not involved the the direct study, pointed out that nearly 12,000 United States women are currently diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most of the cases are linked to the human papilloma virus.
There are over 100 strains of HPV, some of which can cause genital and anal warts. In most individuals, the immune system clears the infection rapidly. Still, persistent infections of particular HPV strains can lead to cervical cancer in certain women.
Due to that fact, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with health groups, recommend that girls ranging to 11 to 26 receive a vaccine or catch-up vaccine.
In a new study that used information from 2008 to 2010, an increasing number of girls were vaccinated. The total percentage for ages 13 to 17 were up to 84% from 75%. "That's good news," said lead researcher Dr. Paul Darden, a pediatrician at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.
The unfortunate news is that some misguided parents blame “safety concerns” more often in 2010 than they did in 2008.
Among those parents whose daughters were not up-to-date on HPV vaccines, 40% stated they had no intend to give their child the vaccination in 2008. In 2010, that number rose 4% overall. Over 16% of those parents blamed health concerns.
"I'm not sure what has gone into that increase," Darden said. "Why would safety concerns almost quadruple in a couple years?"
