Landmark study reveals genetic link between 5 psychiatric disorders - Infographic by NursePractitionerSchoolGuides.org

(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Nurse Practitioner School Guides . org released a new infographic on a recent groundbreaking study. This landmark study revealed genetic links between 5 common psychiatric disorders. This includes Autism, along with Bipolar Disorder, Clinical Depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Schizophrenia. With gripping statistics and true insight, the infographic chronicles the genetic connections and links these disorders share.

According to the informative piece, the study was conducted by The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. This is a collaborative group of researchers that span 19 countries. As part of their intricate study, 61,000 people of European descent had their genomes carefully analyzed and assessed. While some in the group had at least one of the mentioned disorders, others did not. The findings of the study were later published in the medical journal, “The Lancet”.

The study entailed critical analysis of genetic data. The data compiled from those with at least one of the disorders, were also compared with those that had none of the conditions. This helped determine certain causes, along with comparisons between genetic and environmental factors. According to the infographic, scientists determined that genetic makeup was primarily responsible for the disorders. While this included exposures to babies in wombs, it did not completely dismiss the impact of life’s daily experiences.

The study also found a correlation between gene mutations and disorders. With eye catching charts and figures, the infographic lists common gene mutations that are directly connected to the above mentioned disorders. This includes the Ca balance, which plays a key role in cell to cell communication. The study found mutations in two genes that govern the balance of calcium in brain cells. Additional research also concluded that 4 genetic variants are deeply associated with the 5 disorders.

While the infographic is designed to effectively engage and teach readers, it also discusses the possibilities of new and innovative treatments. The study is also an important step for unlocking the causes of mental illnesses. Since the origins of mental illness cannot be determined by simple blood tests, doctors and scientists fully agree that further research has to be conducted.
