Walking Improves Quality of Life for Stroke Victims reports UHWCVA

(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 17, 2013 ) Manassas, VA -- A new study has found that walking is more than just something that can be a generally strong form of low-impact exercise. Especially for those who are unable to run/jog or take on more strenuous activities, due to injuries or ailments, walking is now proving to be even more important than ever.

In a new study published within Stroke reaffirmed the consideration of how walking can improve the quality of life for those who have suffered from strokes.

The study focused on benefits of walking, specifically for those who have recently suffered from a stroke. Such individuals often do not have the energy to take on more strenuous workouts, and even fear falling or general lack of energy.

The Lead author, Dr. Carron Gordon, who is a lecturer for physical therapy for such patients, that those who took brisk walks had a higher quality of life and faster recovery than counterparts who did not.

Gordon and her research team at the University of thee West Indies in Jamaica recruited 70 women and 58 men for their experiment. The average of age of 64, and all participants had experienced a stroke within the last two years. One half of the study subjects were within the control group, receiving massage therapy only. The second half were within the experimental group and were put on a supervised walk regiment. Each participant had the ability to walk with a cane if necessary or requested.

The group which walked had three walks per week for 12 weeks. At the start, the only walks were 15 minutes at a time, and the totals were slowly increased by a half hour at the end of the experiment. The researchers noted that he walked group had a 16.7% increase in their overall measured physical health marks.

The massage group had an increase of 6.7% in their resting heart rate, while the walking group had a 1.5% decrease in resting heart rate. Both of the groups were requested to give an endurance test during a six-minute walk. Not surprisingly, the experimental group was able to outlast the control group by 17.6% overall.
