(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 20, 2013 ) Dothan, AL -- The Washington Elderly Handicapped Transportation Service (WEHTS) offers basic transportation services for individuals who are unable to use traditional public transportation systems. WEHTS is a unique “curb-to-curb” service that transports individuals to essential medical appointments, group shopping trips and personal errands related to income benefits, housing and medical concerns.
In addition to the “curb-to-curb” service, WEHTS offers a “Call & Ride Program.” Much like a taxi service, WEHTS will deliver you to the location of your choosing, however, taxi vouchers are provided to senior citizens at deep discounts. The hours to participate in either program are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm.
All transportation requests must be made at least 96 hours (4 business days) in advance of the individual’s trip. Those who are unable to independently use WEHTS’ services may bring an escort along to assist them during the trip. Individuals who are wheelchair bound are not required to have escorts if they can use their wheelchair independently. However, all wheelchairs must be operational, mechanically safe and have standard features.
WEHTS’ services are provided free of charge to Medicaid recipients as well as those who are non-Medicaid recipients. To use WEHTS’ services, individuals must contact their wards Lead Agencies to request transportation services. Below is a list of the Lead Agencies:
