(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- In a new study analyzed, a gene that was once linked with obesity may also be at fault for the increase in skin cancer.
The study was funded by the University of Leeds, and they noted a specific section of the infamous “fat gene” that was associated with malignant melanoma.
The finding marks the first time that the gene has been linked to a specific disease independent of weight.
The result has suggested a wider role of the gene that was previously thought. The malignant melanoma strain is the fifth most commonly occurring cancer in the United Kingdom. Over 12,800 cases and 2,200 deaths occur each year.
The international team that has analyzed genetic data from the tumors of 13,000 malignant melanoma patients and 60,000 individuals yet unaffected.
The finding showed that those with particular variations in the stretch of DNA within the “fat gene” were found to be at a greater risk of developing the melanoma growths.
The previous research held on the “fat gene” was found with a variant in the section known as intron 1, while the new association is found at intron 8. The prior is linked specifically with overweight issues as well as general overeating.
There are several diseases which have been linked to the precise gene.
The finding now opens up a new focus that researchers can have when working with the gene and its general effects on the body. Previously, the research was noted only for diagnosing traits regarding overeating.
Dr. Mark Iles, who is a fellow at Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine stated: "This is the first time to our knowledge that this major obesity gene, already linked to multiple illnesses, has been linked to melanoma. "This raises the question whether future research will reveal that the gene has a role in even more diseases?"
