(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It would not be too far a stretch to use the word Miracle when discussing the recovery of 3-year-old Isabel Perez's recovery from injuries sustained following being shot by her mother.
"Isabel is doing extremely well given the severity of her injury," her neurosurgeon Dr. Ken Winston said.
Regardless of the amazing survival of the child, the doctor still stresses that recovery will take years, and psychological recovery may take even longer.
Isabel is the lone survivor of her mother's murder-suicide run that occurred recently. Mayra Nunez killed both of her other children, 6-year-old Neveah Morales and 1-year-old Erick Perez, in her home in northeast Denver. She took her own life immediately following the murders.
The ICU pediatrician, Dr. Margaret Clarke, stated it is always very difficult to see these types of events happen to children, however their pediatric team is trained for such occasions, all the same.
When speaking on dealing with the injuries, she noted: "It's what we do on a daily basis, and we are just happy and pleased to provide that to her," Clarke said.
Doctors stated Isabel will be leaving the Denver Health facility soon, and will be transferred to a separate hospital wherein she will begin a difficult road to recovery.
"She's just been an absolutely wonderful miracle to work with," Clarke said. "Over the past week, she's been gaining in interaction and playfulness."
Half a month following her recovery “Bella” is now able to move her right side and is even talking a bit. Doctors noted she is feisty to deal with, which is a rather good sign considering the circumstances.
"Our family has been deeply touched by the support we've received from Colorado, the nation, and the world,” Said Dr. Clarke in a statement released from Isabel's family.
“From the family in Colorado Springs who sent us pizza in the hospital to eat to the prayers and letters we've received from as far as Peru. Our family is grateful for the kind prayers and thoughts we've felt from the community. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to the community in El Paso, TX. Their fundraising efforts, prayers, and support have meant the world to us. As Isabel prepares to leave Denver Health for the next step in her healing we are grateful to the paramedics, Doctors and nurses who have cared for her and us during this difficult time.
