(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 27, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- By now, most people have probably taken note of the many commercials with doctors speaking about skin-care products or general skin health. That is not by accident, as according to a new study at the Mayo Clinic, dermal disorders are the top reason people visit doctors and general physicians in the United States.
From all other non-acute conditions, skin afflictions such as lesions, acne, general rashes, and pre-cancerous pigmentation were at the top of the lists for visiting the doctor in the last half-decade.
Researchers took note of the medical databases of more than 142,000 individuals, and discovered in that process that the skin issues exceeded all of the other health concerns. Other top concerns were afflictions of joint disorders, back pain or general discomfort. Of those studied, the demographics like age and gender were almost identical to the United States, with the only noted exception being the variance of race from the rest of the country.
Conditions did fluctuate by age, with younger patience visiting more for acne, while older patients received treatments for items like lesions or pre-cancerous conditions.
Doctors have released the stand-by of proper etiquette for protecting one's self against common afflictions, listing the three most important factors for common occurrences.
First is to always use sunscreen. The most efficient way to reduce the risk of skin cancer and precancerous moles/pigmentation is to use sunscreen daily. The application of lotion that has at minimum an SPF 15 as well as an SPF 30 for the face will help keep skin looking healthy and young.
Second, lathering soap in application to the face and rinsing at least twice is key to keeping skin healthy and clean. Doctors note that over-zealous scrubbing can extend problems worse than previously noted, and so one should be careful with the force used during scrubbing.
Finally, avoiding harmful exposure to harsh environments is key to healthier skin. Keeping the skin away from exposure of harmful chemicals is important. Even something as simple as wearing gloves when using household chemicals can make all the difference.
