(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The MPs have warned that the government's failure to give details on the new system of medicine pricing is creating an unacceptable uncertainty for the industry, doctors, and patients alike.
The Commons health committee called on the Department of Health to release plans for the “value-based pricing” announced by Andrew Lansley, who was health secretary in December of 2010.
The health committee called for a new system “nebulous” and without “substantive change”, as the committee aims to precisely reflect the value of medicines to the National health Service.
“We do not regard it as acceptable that the arrangements for value-based pricing have still not been settled and that those who will have to work with those arrangements are still unclear about what value-based pricing will mean in practice,” it said. The new criticism came win a new report from the parliamentary committee on the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence, which functions as the government's medicines advisory body.
It comes during a time of growing concern and considerable pressure from doctors, industry companies, as well as officials, who all believe it is time to drop the new approach.
The Department of Health has noted that value-based pricing is likely to apply only to new medicines from 2014 on. The majority will continue to be priced using the existing “pharmaceutical price regulation scheme”.
The reality of the situation is that a growing number of medicines are already being offered with discounts or rebates after it was judged by Nice to be exceeding acceptable levels to offer value for money.
Committee Chairman Stephen Dorrell stated: “There is a lack of clarity around the whole issue which has persisted for too long. Decisions need to be taken, and the details of the scheme made public.”
