Auxiliary Treatment for Veterans May Improve Outlook on Life reports Nirogam

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Scientists are utilizing the expertise and experience of veterans to assist them in a wellness program and discover new evidence-based strategies for returning service members who are adjusting to life after combat.

The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Waisman Center is now offering free complementary and alternative programs to veterans in a move to pioneer a research study that takes the effectiveness of various wellness programs. The ultimate results of the study could lead toward a model that will guide future work, as well as pioneer how to care for those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

There are hundreds of thousands of veterans that are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who are afflicted with PTSD, which is the leading reason behind the alarming suicidal behavior amongst veterans. Despite the advances in psychotherapies and psychopharmacological approaches, the conventional treatments are successful for less than 50% treated.

"There is an urgent need to find new, effective strategies for the many veterans who do not respond to conventional treatment," says Jack Nitschke, associate professor of psychiatry and psychology, who is principal investigator of the study along with Richard J. Davidson, Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry and founder and chair of the center.

The complementary and alternative programs are surely cost-effective, as well as free of side-effects, and have been noted to empower veterans by allowing them to practice coping and proactive wellness techniques. Participants in the pilot phase of the study have recently reported that improved sleep, reduction in chronic pain, and an increased sense of optimism have been noted, among other benefits.

Part of the research involves a center that is offering a free workshop that will include group discussions, breathing and meditation exercises, and stretching routines. Each of these aspects are set to put the body and mind in the proper setting to create positive and proactive outlooks.

The results of the study will assist scientists in determining if complementary and alternative programs benefit veterans with PTSD at significant enough levels for more widespread usage.
