(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 24, 2012 ) Atlanta, GA -- As many as 1,000 nursing graduates will be offered contracts of two years and worth 22,000 per. The new setup is aimed at retaining nurses so as not to be lost to countries like Australia, where one can earn 40,000 or more.
The current pay rate had been 80pc for starting full-time recruits; however, Health Minister James Reilly stated that it could be upped to 26,000 due to premium payments. Certain figureheads in the union criticized the figures as they are offered to the young nurses.
The Health Services Executive (HSE) stated that it would mean that savings around 10m in the nurse and overtime bill for next year.
"It also gives nursing and midwifery graduates an opportunity to gain substantial clinical experience to further their career and professional development, with the security of a two-year contract and salary," added a spokesman.
Dr. Reilly expects that recruitment could start as early as next month. Recently, Nursing Unions recently claimed three quarters of the over 1,500 nurses who are granted registration in Ireland have to emigrate to find employment.
Seamus Murphy of the Psychiatric Nurses Association stated that the salary would amount to 10.50 per hour. "These nurses have a degree after studying for four years but they would earn more working in Aldi," he said.
He added that many in the psychiatric field will graduate with their old jobs being a better option than finding work in their graduating field.
The HSE stated it would get nurses "deployed across many specialties at hospitals and auxiliary health services. Those health services often have to rely on agency staff and overtime workers to maintain minimum services.
Many nurses were lost due to the incentivised retirement plan, which did not account for the lack of replacements for these positions.
