(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 24, 2012 ) Atlanta, GA -- For women who are experiencing menopause, mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats are among the most common complaints. However, there is another effect of the menopausal system that affects millions, and continues to be highly undertreated.
Vaginal discomfort is experienced by many women who current are going through the stages of menopause, and yet only 25% of those who suffer from the affliction seek medical attention. Vaginal Atrophy (VA), is a “silent” symptom that is brought on during menopause, and yet women rarely discuss the symptoms and discomfort with their OBYGN, despite the fact that it is a natural and treatable affliction. In fact, many women are under the erroneous assumption that nothing can be done.
In reality, VA is a chronic condition that is brought on by a estrogen decline, and its symptoms can sometimes be severe if untreated. VA has attributes such as dryness, burning, soreness, and even bleeding during intercourse or pain during urination. When VA is left untreated, it can lead to more serious complications.
A survey conducted showed that 1,010 postmenopausal women ages 55 to 65 (In the United States) who live with the condition felt it created negative effects on their relationship.
Another survey covered by Novo Nordish found that half of the women who were afflicted with the condition avoided intimacy altogether. Three out of 10 women who experienced VA felt they were lacking in attractiveness and felt less desired by their partner.
Sixty-five percent of women expressed concern of sexual intercourse being painful for them or their partner, while a third of men and women they had stopped having sex due to discomfort.
"Beyond the physical symptoms that the woman endures, the sense of intimacy in the relationship, both emotional and physical, declines," says prominent menopause expert James A. Simon, M.D., C.C.D., N.C.M.P., F.A.C.O.G., clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
"The effects on sexual health and interpersonal relationships are sizable. Women should stop suffering in silence, and start speaking up. Women are taking control of most aspects of their health, why not their vaginal health? Women should speak to their doctors. There are treatments available."
