Research Shows Continued Link Between Microbiota and Weight Control Reports Daily Assist

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 10, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- It appears that research is supporting an earlier hypothesis that a lean individual’s microbiota are different from obese people. Lean individuals appear to have a higher proportion of two beneficial bacteria. The two bacteria are Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, which are lacking in quantity in obese individuals.

Evidence is building that the microorganisms boost a the capabilities of the gut bacterial population, thus providing health benefits like an enhanced immune system response and the mitigation of gastrointestinal infections like diarrhea and IBS.

There are roughly 100 trillion bacteria in the average person’s gastrointestinal tract. Of those trillions, there are somewhere in the vicinity of 500 species. The collective of these organisms are called microbiota, and they are influenced by genetics, environment, diet, and immune system.

A study published in 2010 noted that a particular probiotic, Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055, was found to lower abdominal fat in subjects with tendencies to be obese.

Another study noted that post-op weight loss was found in those who took Lactobacillus acidophilus daily.

The research regarding just how and why the effects work is still necessary. However, all studies in rats have elicited encouraging result. One theory regarding the effects is that the balances of microbiota can alter the rate of calorie absorption one experiences.

Researchers are thus far simply scratching the surface regarding what the relationship to microbateria and weight-control is for humans. Work with rats and dogs have seemed produce positive results; however, researches point out that there is much more than can be learned regarding effects as a whole.

There is little question, however, that probiotics can help assist the body in areas like digestion and calorie breakdown. How that will translate to actual weight-control at a personal and specified level is yet to be seen.
