Study Finds Drinking Increase After Weight-Loss Surgeries reports Raspberry Ketone Pure

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- People who have had surgery to lose weight report that they drink more alcohol two years after their operations than they did weeks before the procedures.

A study at the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center looked at 155 patients who underwent gastric bypass or banding operations. The risk of increased drinking should not discourage people from undergoing the operations, said a researcher who worked on the study.

“There is perhaps a risk,” Alexis Conason told Reuters. “I don’t think it should deter people from having surgery, but you should be cautious to monitor [alcohol use] after surgery.”

And the research did not say whether people were endangered by the drinking.

“This does not mean that everyone who has gastric bypass surgery has problems with alcohol or becomes an alcoholic,” Conason said.

The findings of Conason’s team were reported in the Archives of Surgery.

About 61% of study participants initially reported drinking, but that dropped to 20% a month after surgery. However, after about three months, the rate of drinking started to increase. And people drank even more often two years after the operations.

Patients ranked their drinking in a range of 0 to 10. A zero indicated the patient never drank alcohol, but a 10 was the most frequent. Those who had gastric bypasses reported a rise to 3.08 two years after surgery from 1.86 just before the procedure.

Gastric bypasses have been known to reduce alcohol tolerance, Conason noted. That might make consuming alcohol more enjoyable, she said.

Weight loss procedures cost about $20,000. About 200,000 people undergo the surgeries each year, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

A psychiatrist who has studied drinking after surgeries to lose weight, and who was not involved in the study, said patients should talk to their doctors if they find they are drinking more.

“The health risks of obesity are such that people with severe obesity should not forgo bariatric surgery because of this,” Dr. James Mitchell told Reuters.
