Green coffee beans are being marketed as a quick and safe way to lose weight, Judy Ferguson reports at FreeMalaysiaToday.com.
Green coffee beans contain chlorogenic acids, which slows the body’s release of glucose and help balance blood sugar. They also cause fat to be burned by raising the liver’s metabolic output. Those acids, Ferguson writes, slow absorption of fat and thus contribute to weight loss.
Research conducted in India found adults lost weight by 10.5%. The study found that over 22 weeks, the 16 overweight adults who participated lost 17.5 pounds on average. The research recently was presented to the American Chemical Society.
The Indian study is not without its critics. Some have pointed out that the test group was too small to make conclusive statements. Others warn that it could spark a dieting fad.
Green coffee beans have other health benefits, Ferguson writes. They contain polyphenols and have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory features. And chlorogenic acid helps reduce blood pressure, tests on lab rats suggest.
The green coffee beans are different from their roasted brethren, they have little caffeine, so are not a stimulant. The cooking process that roasted beans go through destroys the chlorogenic acids.
Dr. Oz warned viewers to beware of imitations or products that contain fillers such as stearates, silica and cellulose. The extract of green coffee beans should have 45% or more chlorogenic acid.
Dr. Oz also reminded that the best way to achieve lasting weight loss is through eating quality food and getting enough exercise.
