(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 16, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- The Pain Free Socket is a new invention developed to eliminate the painful sensation amputees feel after the loss of a limb. Most amputees describe a residual pain in their amputated limb that can be highly irritating or extremely painful requiring the use of addicting pain or nerve medications to quell. This pain, known as phantom pain, is described as a burning feeling or like thousands of pin-pricks and is believed to result from the brain attempting to send signals to a non-existent limb.
The Pain Free Socket was invented by West Virginia University student Katherine Bomkamp. The device uses the novel idea of heat to effectively trick the brain into focusing on the warmth instead continuing to try to send signals reducing the pain sensation. The prosthesis wearer can control the amount of heat, thereby increasing or decreasing the therapy as needed for their pain level at any moment.
Although the patent-pending device is currently in the development phase, human testing is just around the corner. Later devices could even allow for temperature control with the use of a cell phone. The prosthetic could help as many as ten million amputees around the world. Sales of the device will commence once testing is complete and the Food and Drug Administration grants approval, which can still take a couple more years, but it is exciting that help is on the way to amputees that suffer from phantom pain.
