(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 06, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - The arrival of spring is causing a rise in snake awareness in Australia. While the warmer temperatures become more frequent, the snake venture out to seek the sun. Australian Veterinary Associations are taking steps to warn and advise the public of the possible dangers.
Pet owners must heed these warnings as the snakes may prey, or defend themselves, against pets left outside and/or unattended. Dr. David Neck joined the discussion by advising pet owners that these snakes are more likely to be out during the end of the day. He defended his claims by stating, "Snake bites tend to occur in the late afternoon or early evening. Snakes also tend to be attracted to rodents and rubbish to hide under."
Dr. Neck also advised that pet owners should take extra precaution to check for possible symptoms that are not usually noticed whenever a snake bites an animal. He said in a statement, "Symptoms can vary with different snakes but sudden onset of seizures, vomiting, weakness in the limbs and inability to move may be observed. Soon after the symptoms occur, the animal may collapse with severely labored breathing."
City pet owners can also be at risk. Both the associations and Dr. Neck advise that owners be aware of the present dangers while walking their pets.
Although some snake bites may be deadly, proper, and early treatment can prevent death. For this owners need to be aware of possible bit symptoms he said, "If you spot any of these symptoms in your pet, quickly call the nearest veterinarian so that they can be prepared for your arrival at the veterinary hospital with the right treatment."
