Discoveries add to proof of MRI scans being safe for people with pacemakers reports iop.net.au

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 08, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - A study showed that MRI scans are safe for people with pacemakers, but manufacturers keep on warning people to avoid putting pacemakers into MRI machines because the strong magnetic fields can cause the wires to heat up and will eventually burn the heart tissue or may stop working due to mechanical or an electrical fault.

According to Dr. Christopher Kramer, a spokesperson for the American Heart Association (AHA) , problems that are theoretical at the moment can turn unfounded as we research over and over again. He claims that 99.9% devices scanned showed no problem when scanned.

Researchers, according to foxnews.com, have also found modifications of the same scale when they studied fifty patients using heart machines who previously had not been scanned. This pointed towards the fact that such a divergence should be considered as the norm. Health officials in the United States of America have previously granted permission to one MRI-compliant pacemaker whilst a large number of patients continue to make do with older versions. Between 50% to 70% of those individuals may also necessitate the use of an MRI.

Dr. Robert Russo and colleagues at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California, reviewed records of 109 patients and each one had gotten one MRI in life. Further studies showed that there were no deaths or injuries due to MRI and it is safe to say that it is not dangerous to use MRI scan machine with a pace maker.

It is claimed that the results drawn from the testing are not yet conclusive and have to be established in a research on a much larger scale in a manner similar to the MagnaSafe Registry; a project also being operated by Russo. Both he and Kramer stated that an increasing number of centers have being conducting MRIs on patients using pacemakers since there were literally no other alternatives.
