(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, California – The Consumers Union has partnered with both the American Institutes for Research and the University of Maryland in and effort to try and bring some attention on the need for a Healthcare Insurance literacy tool.
Many people do not fully understand all of the aspects and coverage that is associated with their health insurance policy. Due to the fact that they do not understand the coverage that is being offered by the health insurance providers makes it extremely difficult to make an informed decision when selecting a health insurance policy. This in turns causes the decision maker to become rather frustrated and to just select a policy that they believe is the one that is in the best interested of their concerns, but are not fully sure if that is actually the case.
Lynn Quincy, senior health policy analyst for Consumers union stated, “When consumers don’t understand health insurance, it causes frustration and may undermine their coverage selection and access to healthcare. Just like we can evaluate reading levels or financial literacy, we are looking to develop a measure of health insurance literacy. With this tool, we can work towards creating health insurance documents that consumers understand and better serve everyone involved in the health insurance experience.”
The Consumers Union is well aware with the fact that it is incredibly difficult to make an informed decision on something when you do not fully understand it, and this is why they are advocating the need for literacy measurement tools to be put into place. Currently, health insurance policies are supposed to be setup so that they are easily understood by the average consumer, the only problem is that there is no way to truly measure this. The lack of the measurement tool means that it is incredibly difficult for the healthcare providers to be sure that their clients understand the policies that they are selecting.
Consumer Union is pushing to have the literacy tool put into place in order to be able to ensure that the consumers actually understand what they are agreeing to with their policies. This is extremely important for the simple reason that some of the consumers are not only selecting a policy that will work for their family and themselves, but they are also responsible for selecting a policy that will be used for their company and all of its employees.
