Heroin Use Increase Prompts Push for Needle Exchange in Miami, Miami Drug Rehab Responds

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 02, 2016 ) Miami, FL -- According to the Miami New Times, addiction recovery activists are pushing for the establishment of needle exchange programs in Miami in response to the recent increase in heroin abuse in the city. 194 programs already exist across America with the intent of reducing the spread of disease through needle sharing and use of dirty needles.

Should Miami join these other programs, people using an injectable drug such as heroin would be able to exchange their used needles at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine for fresh needles, as well as an examination to check for infections and disease and obtaining pamphlets for recovery services in the area. Opponents of the idea note that the needle exchange will not focus on ending addiction and drug use; however, supporters note that reducing the threat of disease and offering resources for rehabilitation services is much more effective than incarceration.

Miami Drug Rehab, a leading provider of heroin rehab in Miami, is intimately aware of the struggles faced each day by people living with untreated substance abuse disorders. They recognize that communicable diseases occur in high numbers among people living with addiction, and recognize the potential benefits of a needle exchange program within the community.

A representative of Miami Drug Rehab comments,

"Establishing a needle exchange program in Miami has a potential to protect thousands of people from communicable disease. As it stands, Miami still hosts the highest rate of HIV infections per capita, some of which were contracted through needle sharing and drug use. Additionally, diseases such as Hepatitis B and C are commonly contracted through sharing needles. While we understand the concern that the program is not directly concerned with ending drug use, one cannot force effective treatment on those who are not prepared to accept it. We support the establishment of a needle exchange program as a means to protect the community which we serve."
