After the conditioning, they analyzed the brain of the rats. There were also other sets of experiments that involved having the rats recallthe fear memory. It was found that the rats fed with curcumin experienced a difficult time regaining the fear memory. The researchers suggest that curcumin played an essential role in letting go of the bad memories.
According to Glenn Schafe, PhD, a professor in the Hunter College's department of psychology and the study coauthor, curcumin has efficiently prevented fear memory reconsolidation. What makes it even more interesting is that the effect seemed to last for a long time. While these promising results were purely based on a rat study, researchers believe that curcumin could be an excellent ingredient to use in testing human subjects in the future.
It is believed that the anti-inflammatory property of curcumin affects the brain's cellular process. Inflammation is associated with the development of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and PSTD. An anti-inflammatory agent such as curcumin could potentially aid in the many processes involving the brain, such as memory formation.
