Experts Now Believe Type 2 Diabetes May Increase OneÂ’s Risk Of Osteoarthritis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 24, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Diabetes is affecting quite a number of people nowadays, especially in the United States. Having diabetes alone can be troublesome, especially since its existence is associated with the development of certain conditions.

Type 2 diabetes is believed to increase one's risk of osteoarthritis. This arthritic condition does not just develop from wear and tear, and it can potentially be caused by diabetes. Age and body mass index are believed to be top factors for the development of arthritis.

A study published online by Diabetes Care reveals that type 2 diabetes causes people to be twice as likely to develop osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis associated with diabetes is believed to be more severe, and may require a joint replacement surgery.

The study co-author and the chief of rheumatology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Georg Schett, M.D., believes the finding of the study demonstrates the manner that age, body mass and diabetes become independent and powerful risk factors of joint failure. The authors of the study actually have varying opinions about the way that diabetes increases the risk of osteoarthritis.

George King, M.D., Harvard Medical School's professor of medicine and the research director of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, believes that the study demonstrates osteoarthritis could potentially be a component of the complications of diabetes. Diabetics are also believed to be more likely to suffer from musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis.

According to the authors of the study, there is a possibility that high blood sugar levels are responsible for triggering collagen destruction. Collagen is one of the cartilage's main components. It is also believed that high blood sugar levels could potentially stimulate the production of inflammatory substances, which significantly damages the joint.

Dr. Schett believes that osteoarthritis could be one of the manifestations of metabolic syndromes, which are a group of risk factors. These risk factors are obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease. He suggests that individuals with diabetes should be able to manage metabolic syndrome to increase their protection against symptomatic joint disease.

Today, people use a variety of remedies to increase their protection against conditions such as arthritis. Glucosamine supplements are one of the natural alternatives that are used by arthritis sufferers to achieve some improvements in their condition. Many sufferers reported that they have experienced significant pain relief as well as an improvement in their mobility. Glucosamine is believed to have therapeutic properties that can help repair joint cartilage damage (http://amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
