For most individuals, organic indicates that no manmade chemicals have been used to grow a food or control pests. Those essential ingredients span a laundry list of ingredients, from chemicals designed to prevent potatoes from sprouting during storage to chemicals used to prevent strawberries from falling prey to slugs and snails. While experts admit that there are organic methods that work, they claim they're not as effective and are reducing profit margins.
Consumers that want organic products must read labels closely to determine that they're truly organic. There are approximately 200 chemicals that producers can use and still claim an organic label.
