Probiotics May Reverse Allergies

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 19, 2015 ) Largo, Florida -- For allergy sufferers, relief may be in sight. According to research carried out at Vanderbilt University, probiotic supplements may reduce symptoms of some of the most common seasonal allergies.

The team of researchers lead by Justin Turner reviewed the findings of 23 independent trials related to probiotics' effects on allergy symptoms. According to Turner, upon compiling the results of the trials, the team identified a statistically compelling correlation between probiotics and allergy symptoms. However, Turner added, ideally the study will prompt further research to determine how allergy sufferers can best benefit.

To long-time advocates of probiotics for health and wellness, the trial confirms a long-held hypothesis. Chantilly Health, a Tampa-based dietary supplements producer, recommends using its 'Mega Supreme Enzyme Probiotic' for a wide range of symptoms, including indigestion, bloating, and other digestive complaints. In addition, the company points to the supplement's option for individuals with allergies or sensitivities to gluten products.

Also known as "friendly" or "good bacteria", probiotic products contain microorganisms that promote health within the human digestive system. Probiotics have long held a place in traditional diets from around the world. Pliny the Elder advised patients to drink fermented milk for intestinal complaints. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir, sourdough, and miso hold central roles in the cuisines of diverse cultures.

Scientific trials have more recently pinpointed connections between these foods or probiotic supplements and digestive function, or "gut health." According to the new study, probiotic foods or supplements may in fact prove useful in alleviating more than only digestive complaints.

Of the 23 scientific studies that Vanderbilt researchers reviewed, 17 demonstrated a clear change in allergy sufferers' reported symptoms. In the researchers' words, both rhinitis-specific quality of life and nasal quality of life improved. In other words, regularly taking probiotics reduced subjects' nasal congestion, runny nose symptoms, and the overall quality of life associated with their allergies.

The 23 different trials were carried out using varied probiotic strains. As the term "probiotic" may refer to a broad group of microorganisms, further studies may be needed to more precisely determine the efficacy of individual strains.

Allergic rhinitis affects between 10 and 30 percent of the population. According to the Vanderbilt study, probiotic foods and supplements may offer a solution.
