Study Reveals Turmeric May Be A VegetarianÂ’s Best Friend

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Nowadays, people are improving their food preferences and lifestyle to boost their immunity and improve their overall health conditions. There are people such as vegetarians who follow a healthy diet, and there are also those who regularly exercise to stay physically fit. In addition to having a healthy diet and lifestyle, there are also supplements that are believed to be beneficial for overall health.

A study reveals that turmeric may be a vegetarian's best friend. Turmeric is a natural, medicinal spice that has been used for thousands of years as a kitchen ingredient and a treatment for a wide variety of conditions. It is also a popular ingredient for individuals, such as vegetarians, who follow a particular dietary regimen.

"Today, turmeric is made widely available through supplementation. It has an active therapeutic ingredient called curcumin, which is believed to have powerful therapeutic benefits," said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

A study reveals three principal findings about curcumin. One is that the therapeutic ingredient has the capacity to enhance DHA synthesis from its precursor and elevate enzyme levels that are involved in DHA synthesis. Another finding is that curcumin can potentially increase DHA synthesis in the liver. Lastly, it was found that a treatment that involved ALA and curcumin could result in brain DHA elevations. It is also associated with a reduction in the anxiety-like behavior in rodents.

ALA is a form of omega-3 fatty acids, and is a healthy fat essential for body functioning. The finding that curcumin is beneficial for the increase in brain DHA content implies that it can potentially be important in the plant-based diet of humans, especially those who do not consume fish, which is an excellent source of DHA.

According to researchers, if humans require animal food to thrive, turmeric can be used as a plant ally to convert plant derived omega-3 fats to DHA. This can potentially be helpful to individuals who do not eat animal-based food.

Turmeric is widely studied due to the potentially powerful health benefits it offers. Many people nowadays are taking advantage of turmeric powder, and use it to prepare a wide variety of dishes. There are also those who simply use curcumin supplements to take advantage of such therapeutic properties.

Curcumin supplements that contain a black pepper extract called BioPerine are widely popular nowadays. This black pepper extract is believed to be helpful for increasing the bioavailability of curcumin, and thus increase its absorption inside the body (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Extract-Vegetarian/dp/B00VSVKJ8I/).
