Recent Studies Reveal The Positive Effects Of Aromatherapy For Arthritis Pain Relief

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 05, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Pain makes individuals with arthritis suffer, and this is why there has been an increasing number of pain relief options available on the market. The good news is that there is a natural remedy that sufferers can make use of to potentially relieve pain.

Recent studies reveal the positive effects of aromatherapy for pain relief among arthritis sufferers. According to experts, there are scents that are believed to be very effective for relaxation and pain relief.

Mehmet Oz, M.D., professor of surgery at the Columbia University Medical Center, believes that aromatherapy is effective mainly because it works directly on the brain's emotional center, which is known as the amygdala. He added that the effects are instant, and this means that individuals with arthritis can immediately achieve pain relief by inhaling certain scents. There are also other uses of aromatherapy such as anxiety reduction.

Dr. Oz is a cardiovascular surgeon and he studied aromatherapy to seek alternative methods for reducing the anxiety in individuals suffering from heart ailments. He has a collaborator named Jane Buckle, PhD, a clinical aromatherapist, and together they recommend the use of 15 drops of an essential oil such as chamomile, lavender or eucalyptus. The drops should be diluted with 2 tablespoons of neutral oil such as eucalyptus or almond.

"For relaxation, vanilla and green apple can be used for pain relief. If you want to feel more awake, you can take advantage of citrus, jasmine and peppermint," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Alan Hirsch, M.D., neurologist at the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, believes that sufferers do not have to limit themselves to essential oils. However, they need to limit the length of their exposure to retain the effectiveness of the scent.

The Columbia University Medical Center conducted a study that found subjects who were trying to complete stress tests and smelled vanilla, had more stable heart rates as well as blood pressure readings. It is recommended that individuals with arthritis make use of a few drops of vanilla extract on a handkerchief, and use it throughout the day. Dr. Hirsch also stated that jasmine, peppermint and citrus can significantly help people feel more awake. They can use any of these essential oils with almond or avocado oil.

There are quite a number of natural remedies that are ideal for arthritis sufferers. In addition to aromatherapy, many people are also using fish oil, especially those who are suffering from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (http://amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K).
