Studies Investigate Connection Between Food Allergies And Rheumatoid Arthritis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 07, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Nutritionists and health experts have long been saying that good food choices are one of the secrets to having a healthy body. Unhealthy food items are believed to be detrimental to overall health and this is why health experts recommend increased intake of fruits and vegetables. Eating unhealthy food is also associated with arthritic conditions.

Studies are investigating the connection between food allergies and rheumatoid arthritis. According to experts, there are food types that can cause inflammation, which is one of the key symptoms associated with the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

"While no definitive evidence exists, researchers believe that unhealthy eating may increase a person's risk for the condition," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Jonathan Brostoff, MD and professor of allergy and environmental health at Kings College, London, has expressed his theory about the issue. He stated that the gut is exposed directly to food and its immune system is the one that recognizes potential allergens. When the immune system mistakenly perceives a particular food as harmful, food allergies take place.

The immune system then releases IgE antibodies, or immunoglobulin E, that fight against the food. This results in a set of chain reactions that also cause inflammation symptoms. Brostoff believes that antibodies and proteins work together to produce immune complexes in the intestine. These complexes circulate around the body, including the joints, which increases inflammation risk. When the antibodies recognize a particular food to be an allergen, they alert themselves once the food is eaten again.

"Whether or not a link can be established between food allergies and rheumatoid arthritis, healthcare professionals recommend that individuals should always be careful about the types of food they put into their bodies," O'Sullivan.

There are certain types of food that do not cause inflammation. Experts suggest that patients should choose these food items, as well as those that are believed to fight inflammation. The Arthritis Foundation has provided examples on their website of food items that are highly recommended for arthritis patients. Consumers are also encouraged to make use of the technology available to them and research more about anti-inflammatory foods on the internet.

In addition to eating anti-inflammatory foods, experts also recommend the use of natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine has been widely used by many arthritis sufferers, with many claiming that they were able to achieve pain relief and regain their mobility (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
