(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 02, 2015 ) Huntsville, AL -- Over 220 Xarelto lawsuits have been filed on behalf of patients who allegedly suffered dangerous, uncontrolled bleeding due to the new-generation blood thinner, Southern Med Law reports. These Xarelto lawsuit claims are consolidated to U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana under U.S. District Judge Eklon E. Fallon and all allege that Xarelto manufacturers Johnson & Johnson and Bayer Healthcare failed to warn patients and their physicians about the potential uncontrollable bleeding side effects of the drug, and that there currently is no effective reversal agent to stop the bleeding. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xarelto (rivaroxaban) as a to preventative of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and to reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation. When compared to Warfin, an oral anticoagulant approved by the FDA in 1954 and had been the only FDA-approved blood thinner on the market unti newer blood thinner like Xarelto, Pradaxa and Eliquis received FDA approval. The new generation blood thinners, however, can cause severe bleeding and there have no known antidotes to reverse the effects of the blood thinner medications, the federal agency said. Warfarin uses vitamin K as an antidote to reverse the effects of bleeding.

Xarelto, manufactured by Bayer Healthcare and marketed in the U.S. by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2011 to reduce the risk of blood clots, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and stroke in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery. However, court records show that the lawsuits consolidated in Philadelphia and Louisiana have similar questions of fact regarding allegations that drug makers marketing of the blood thinner as a safer alternative to the older drug Warfarin. The lawsuits allege that while vitamin K can be used a reversal agent to stop bleeding in patients taking Warfarin, there is currently no known reversal agent for patients who suffer internal bleeding while on Xarelto.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) consolidated all federally filed Xarelto lawsuits to Louisiana District Court in December 2014, and will continue to transfer new federal Xarelto lawsuits to that court for coordinated pretrial proceedings.
