(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 02, 2015 ) Las Vegas, NV -- The Food Security Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has called for much tighter controls and screening of poultry flocks to curb the increase, which is at odds with the rest of Europe, where infection rates have stabilized, saying over 2,600 people got food poisoning from campylobacter in Ireland in 2014, up 14% on the previous year, when 2,288 cases were reported. However a brand-new European Food Safety report published at the very same time discovered that the number of cases in Europe had fallen slightly for the first time in 5 years in 2013, though with 214,779 cases, it still continues to be the leading cause of gastrointestinal disorder.

The figures recorded by the Health Protection Surveillance Center in Ireland are the highest in Europe, because campylobacteriosis wasn't legally notifiable till 2004, requiring joint consumer and industry action to take on the problem, stated the FSAI director of food science Dr Wayne Anderson. He likewise said that the salmonella infection had also been a major problem in Ireland 15 years earlier, though industry efforts to decrease contamination in eggs and poultry had actually lead to a radical decrease.

According to Dr Anderson, the danger of infection could be eliminated by thoroughly cooking poultry and by preventing cross-contamination between raw meat and ready-to-eat foods, and has called for methodical testing of all poultry flocks prior to slaughter to obtain data indicating which producers need to improve bio-security, with the onus on the processors and merchants to co-fund such tests.

Vincent Carton of the Irish Poultry Processors Association said the market accepted the requirement for action to decrease campylobacter, but the issue was discovering exactly what worked, as comprehensive efforts so far including leak-proof packaging had failed to decrease disease rates. He added... "Some countries such as Sweden, whose poultry flocks were allegedly campylobacter-free, actually had a higher rate of illness than Ireland, so the real difficulty was actually being able to establish the route of infection. The use of trisodium phosphate to spray poultry flocks had actually been shown to work to minimize infection, though this was prohibited in Europe in spite of the European Food Safety Authority finding it was safe to use."

According to Company Director Neil Speight, children are also at risk of food poisoning from contaminated food in packed lunches. He said... "We all really need to know what Campylobacter is, as it can often make us more sick than Salmonella does. Also, following poultry cases of food poisoning comes the problem of packed lunch food poisoning, with food going off before it's eaten when not cooled correctly. Recent reports have come out of both the US and Australia regarding the rising cases of food poisoning, saying how much more children were at risk, and the need for parents to pack food in a freezable lunch box, so germs wouldn't even get the chance to develop."
