National Safe Kids Campaign Publishes Child Burn Injury And Incidence Rates

Safety Seat Sunshade Video Review For Freddie And Sebbie

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 20, 2015 ) Las Vegas, NV -- Injury and death rate statistics have been made available by the National Safe Kids Campaign and the United States Fire Administration, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The report reveals that most fire-related deaths are caused by smoke inhalation of toxic gases produced by fire, with actual flames and burns only accounting for about 30% of fire-related deaths and injuries.

The report reveals that the majority of fires that kill or hurt kids are residential fires, saying that children aged 4 or less hospitalized for burn-related injuries, totaled 65 % scald burns, and 20% contact burns. The statistics show that fires kill about 500 youngsters aged 14 or less each year, with hot faucet water scald burns causing most deaths and hospitalizations than any other hot liquid burn. According to the report, the leading reason for home fires and related injuries is home-cooking equipment, nevertheless, most fire-related deaths are from residential fires ignited by cigarette smoking materials such as cigarettes or matches.

Amongst the most common causes of product-related thermal burn injuries among children ages 14 and under, according to the report, are hair curlers, curling irons, room heating units, ovens, irons, gas, and fireworks, though a lot of heat burns to youngsters, particularly children between 6 months and 2 years, are triggered by hot foods or liquids spilled in the cooking area, or other locations where food is prepared and served.

The report goes on to say that over 50 % of children aged 5 and under who die from house fires are asleep at the time of the fire, with another one-third of these kids being too young to react appropriately, and that residential fires causing death normally take place throughout the cold-weather months, December through February. The statistics also confirm that a lot of child related house fires start in a bedroom or living room, when children are left unattended, with the majority of these fires started by children, while having fun with matches or lighters. Finally, the report reveals that kids in homes without a working fire alarm system are at a higher threat of fire-related death and injury in the event of a fire, and that children aged 5 and under are twice as likely to die in a fire than any other age group.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) published a report last year about a safety seat heat study from Japan. That report revealed that a child's safety seat can reach temperatures as high as 149 degrees when left for several hours in direct sun. "That will burn," said Neil Speight, a spokesman for Freddie and Sebbie, who added... "Imagine what can happen if you place a small child on a surface that's 149 degrees. Not pleasant, I'm sure. Once again, accidents can be prevented, and in this case a simple safety seat sunshade would suffice to prevent a safety seat from reaching such high temperatures."
